Working Together to Improve the Learning Experience

Rock Creek School in Walkersville, Maryland, provides individualized special education programs for students aged 3 to 21 with a wide range of severe disabilities. The school was very interested in installing a multi-sensory room to facilitate learning and help their students regulate their bodies.

They turned to Southpaw to develop a Multi-Sensory Experience (MSE) solution that would perfectly fit their students’ unique needs.

Working closely with therapists and specialists from all over the country, Southpaw strives to create the finest products possible. And we’re proud to be the only manufacturer of MSE equipment in the United States.

During the first phase of the project, before construction even began, Tom Marshall, Director of MSE Sales, Training & Product Development, gathered all the information he needed to start building a one-of-a-kind solution to address the unique needs of Rock Creek students, staff and facility. Tom met with the school's principal, occupational therapist and physical therapist to listen to their needs and find out what would best help their student population.

Southpaw created a customized solution that met the sensory needs of Rock Creek’s diverse student body, including options for all forms of sensory input, including vestibular, visual, proprioceptive, auditory and tactile input.

By providing novel situations, a therapy will continue to be fresh and exciting for students. The flexible multi-sensory room we created can be easily customized with swings or by adding new videos and music.

Katie Buckley, principal of Rock Creek School, said “When you see the kids come out of the sensory room, you see smiles and happiness. You see a more of a sense of calm.”
